Food Storage Blog

Hi guys.
Here’s a good resource for long term food storage.
Dumping stuff in a 55 gallon barrel isn’t much of a good idea, but other than that there’s lots of info for storing, cooking and mostly organizing.

FerFAL,

Using a 55 gallon metal drum is an excellent way of saving money on your food storage and protecting your food from mice and other critters. Instead of using 5 gallon plastic buckets, at $6 US, you put the food in the drum. A used drum with lid cost about $10 US. It takes 10 buckets to hold 350 pounds of wheat or rice and just one drum for the same amount of food.

I would still suggest using oxygen absorbers and mylar bags if you store your food in a drum.

What would be the advantage other than mice protection and price?
For long term food storage the real advantage is the lack of oxygen, (mylar and oxi absorber), but in a 55 gallon barrel you put all the eggs in one basket, so to speak. :)

FerFAL,

Truly, there aren't any other major advantages to using a drum compared to plastic buckets.

But - Some of your readers might have access to drums but not buckets.

And - You can cache a large amount of food, at a remote location, and not worry about rats, either.
